WEEK 2 – PROSODY

In this weeks lecture, we spoke about sonic prosody and how/why it is used. So what is prosody? prosody is where you really focus every element of your music to a set theme. For instance, you could want to speak about someone on the beach having a good time, drinking a few drinks. To achieve this, I would make sure to write in a major key, which is known for being happy, and then I would think about what instruments would compliment this setting. So an acoustic guitar, drums with brushes bass, ETC. You would also want to focus the lyrics around this area.

For my piece, I came up with the concept of ‘Drowning in your head’. I started off this piece, by sampling a wave sound that I found on youtube, I then EQ’d it, and put the Valhalla room reverb on it to make it sound bigger, and more sad. As the Room reverb colours the source in a melancholy way depending on what preset you use.

For the general feel of this song, I wanted it to feel like you were almost accepting your fate. That you were at peace with it. But then when the song gets more choppy, in verse 2, you’re almost waking up and realising that there’s much more to live for. Which leads into the chorus, where its really full on, full band, soaring vocals, everything. This portrays the feeling that you’re frantically swimming up to try and surface, and you get there, and you’re keeping afloat. But then the song suddenly drops out. We’re back to simply just a really reverbed guitar with intimate vocals. What I wanted to do with this drastic change in energy. Was kind of show what it is like to have a setback from this feeling of motivation and positivity. I believe that I achieved this feeling. But the way that it differs from the beginning of this song, is that straight after this section, we leap into the choppy pre-chorus again. Way sooner than it appeared first. This is you getting into a routine of sorts, picking yourself up, learning how to get yourself out of the pit of despair; and we’re now back at the chorus. We’re back to thriving and staying above water.

Lyrically, this song flowed really well for me. As at the time of writing it. I was really depressed, and I felt hopeless. But if anything this song was almost an outlet for me to express my desire to get out of it.

It genuinely did help me, as it got me feeling more confident about my songwriting ability. I know it’s not the most refined piece of music. But it was the first full song in this genre that I had ever wrote. That, and I wrote and mixed it in around 3-4 hours; And for that, I am proud.

Lyrics:

VERSE 1

Sittin in silence alone, the walls hugged with lamplight. Stuck to my phone, just waiting. Waiting for a sign of light waitin for you. As I can’t fall asleep. Your pillows still warm, mine from tears yours from absence. I can’t go on anymore, my head soaked with sadness.

PRE CHORUS

But As I fall in too deep, my heads in quarrel. Cuz I don’t know, where I stand with you no more. Chasin out intrusive thoughts with the light of you. But I don’t see, the otherside

CHORUS

Yeah don’t mind me, I’m slowly losing my mind. Cuz I can’t see, the other side. Yeah don’t kind me, I’m slowly losing my mind, Cuz I can’t cut the strings

To conclude this post. This exercise was great for me. It developed my ability to track tighter, build almost a wall of sound in the verses with the reverb and delay. It also taught me how to program drums, which was something I’ve been wanting to get a hang of for a while now.

It’s also helped me focus my lyric writing around a specific visual imagination.

WEEK 1!

After quiet a few months off university, and secluding myself to 4 walls. I had my first day back! Seeing everyone was so lovely and really propped up my mood! The summer was very much so filled with ups and downs mentally, however I’ve came out of it possibly the most focused and motivated (and happy) I’ve ever been!

It feels like a switch has been flipped in my head and I’m genuinely so excited and motivated to get stuck into my course! A few weeks before we all came back, I decided I wanted to really sit down and focus on getting better at recording and getting some basic mixing skills worked up.

My first voyage was to learn to program drums, at first, this was extremely daunting and made me want to throw my computer out of the window. However I persevered and then the next day it clicked. I learnt the value of quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes etc and I was instantly able to create decent, serviceable drum beats to assist my songwriting. Linked below is the first song i’ve tracked while fully knowing how too program:

WEEK 1 CHALLENGE!

So this week we were challenged to create a piece of music utilizing the ‘tresillo rhythm.’ This term, was alien to me. Which is ironic because I have actually listened to many pieces of music that utilise it.

I’ve never actually tried writing music with a set agenda/idea carving what I do. So to do this for me seemed pretty difficult at the beginning. Although after about half an hour of messing around I started to get the hang of it, and i’m genuinely very happy with what I was able to come up with.

I started off by making a drum beat as a basis to follow, as it’s typically in the percussion that this rhythm is most prominent in. I made a simple beat for the A section and then for the B section i veered away from using it as I wanted to create a chorus for this piece to test my ability to flow in and out of different rhythms.

I then started to track the guitars which began to be a problem for me, as admittedly I do need to be tighter. I believe this is because I usually play music that falls under the metal sub genres, and with that I’m just used to playing it, as the music fits to a click perfectly. With this genre (latin? salsa? i don’t know) there is a lot more flair and nuances that typically I wouldn’t try technique wise such as playing muted chords to fill in little areas of silence; Which I find difficult to do, however practice makes perfect and i’m sure with more practice I will inevitably crack it!

What changed this track for me, was bass. Now I absolutely adore playing bass, as I feel that it is SO underappreciated. Bass can completely change the dynamic of songs and spring so many ideas on where to go next. I looped the tresillo drum section and just played around until I created something I was happy with. It turns out, that I wrote my favourite section of music yet. It had SO much feel and groove and it just made me want to dance! The bass tone merged extremely well with the guitar tone as well and made it sound really warm and full. I tracked guitar individually on two tracks panned hard left and hard right (100%), and tracked two bass tracks individually as well both going straight down the center. I tracked a clean bass sound to give it a deep, rich sound. I tracked the second layer with a slightly more dirty tone to give the bass some definition in the mix as well. It is probably the best bass sound I have gotten so far! For the guitars and bass I used the Neural DSP Cory Wong Archetype plugin as I found that the clean tones are absolutely gorgeous and extremely good for a digital plugin.

I also had a pretty cool idea spring to mind, which was too record me clapping another variation of the Tresillo rhythm over one of the sections. I used my Shure SM7b to capture these claps. However unfortunately I didn’t really get a good sound because my room has a lot of space in it so the room reverb lessened the quality of the sound and I didn’t have anything to isolate the sound enough!

Linked below is my piece:

To conclude, I have found this challenge very beneficial. It has given me a new insight into how to approach song writing, and it has made me so much more interesting in exploring other rhythms in the future!

GLASS KINGDOM

So for the two years that I’ve been at the University, I’ve been in a progressive metalcore project called ‘Glass Kingdom.’ During this time, I have played shows in: Cheltenham, Birmingham and Leicester. We were also meant to play in Bristol, Bedford and Wolverhampton but unfortunately we had to pull of them shows due to our original drummer leaving.

Our biggest show was with the critically acclaimed ‘Black Tongue’ who have toured Europe, the US Australia and more! This was a big deal for me because they’ve been a band that I have looked up to for a while now. I remember when i was first getting into heavy music, I heard them and just thought how the hell do people listen to this, it’s just noise. Little did I Know I would grow to absolutely adore them and actually share the stage with them.

It’s been a wild ride for the past two years. We released our debut track Titled ‘Chemicals’ on the 30th of December last year to a decent reception! It felt great to finally have a track out!

WEEK 12

Overall, I’m quite happy with the performance. Although, I felt that It could have gone better,

I could have worked on the melodies more to get something more concrete. As there’s parts in the performance where I find myself to be quite pitchy, and mine and Zara voices didn’t work to well together because of the lack of time I spent on working on the melodies and harmonies.

I have learnt a lot from this module, and what I am capable of. This new range I’ve been forced to work on has really improved to a level that I am happy with, and will definitely utilise plenty in the future. It’s also inspired me to start a band in a similar taste and like The XX.

WEEK 11

This week we had our performance. I was really nervous about this. As singing, in this style is really out of my comfort zone. I’m typically a metal vocalist, so I’m very used to just using the top of my range consistently and belting. However with this project, it was very reserved and held back. Applying nearly no pressure vocally. At the beginning this proved to be a challenge for me, as it requires a lot of vocal control to sing really breathy and low. I found that this really pushed me to work on it though, and I have seen the benefits.

Below is the video from the performance:

week 10

This week we finished working on the structure. It was down to the polishing up the vocal rhythms and melodies. To do this, I composed the main melody, and then got Adam to play the note at the octave above. I did this, because me and Zara have different timbres. I personally love the way female and male vocals work together. Songs that have this, typically impress me very much.

With a week till the performance I was nervous. The melodies in this video weren’t final either. However, after this practice I started listening to a band called “The XX”. As I felt that they were quite similar to what we were doing. In doing this, I discovered exactly what kind of melody I wanted. For the majority of the song, I wanted a very lowkey feel. With the vocals being quite dreamy. The XX also have a female, and male lead. The way their voices work together really motivated me to nail down exactly what I wanted to do.

In the end I’m quite happy with what we got down.

WEEK 9

The tech spec for our project was really simple.

All we needed was: 2 SM58’s, 2 Mic stands, Sustain Pedal, guitar amp.

We ended up not using the drum machine, as it ended up not fitting the sound we were going for. We couldn’t really control the dynamics of it. Instead of that, Haydn programmed the percussion on his MacBook, and we hooked that up to the PA to get that playing through the speakers. This also eliminated a lot of human error that could have happened. As we had an A beat and a B beat for the different sections, and someone would have had to press the button each time. This could have caused timing issues. So programming it fully got rid of the timing issues.

In this week as well, we decided that we wanted an intensive session on what to do with the song. So we all sat in our classroom, and tracked down what we were doing into a logic session so we had a full, mapped out idea of what we were doing. Here’s a video clip from this session:

WEEK 8

This week we learnt about lyricism. I found this particularly interesting because its something I’ve been partaking in, and enjoying for a while now.

I personally disagree with requiring rhyme. I don’t like writing lyrics that rhyme a lot, as I see them to typically be, entry level and corny. Obviously in context though, In rap rhyme is crucial, and I really like it in this context.

Something I did take from this lecture though was repetition. While this is an obvious trope that is used in essentially every song. With a repeating chorus. I’ve never really wrote my lyrics outside of choruses using repetition. In the lyrics I’ve wrote for this module, there’s a line that’s repeated 3 times for the 2 times it comes up in the song. The line is “Please stay with me my inevitable”. I really liked this line, and I found it to be really impactful. So much so, that I felt like the song itself would benefit from having this section repeated.

Here are the lyrics in full that I wrote:

Well I see you lying there,

The tide rolls in and takes you away.

An ambience left in the balance.

Tonight (extended) we lay in the clouds.

Delving deeper into my mind.

Pre chorus

Lonely nights on the peer,

I can only wish you felt so endeared.

Lookin in those eyes, a pale canvas with no near soul to touch.

CHORUS

The world is not for you and me,

The stars don’t align, why won’t you be mine,

The sleepless nights left dwelling in the dark.

Please stay with me, my inevitable. (X3)

Verse2

Walking down the alleyway,

Brisk cut of the night.

Filling ever black into the dusk.

Day turns night,

Everlasting fight.

I believe that they could have some improvement done to them, but as a base I’m very happy with them.
